About
Big Island Yoga

Our nonprofit’s mission is to offer traditional alignment based yoga, geared to the individual needs and capabilities of each student. We seek to impart the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits associated with the practice of the eight limbs of yoga.

For All People to Live in Harmony & Peace

Experience a sense of  strength, stamina, concentration, coordination, flexibility and more using physical alignment as a starting point to encourage the spread of intelligence throughout the body, the growth of self-awareness, and an experience of the asanas (poses) as a form of “meditation in action”.

With a warm, welcoming atmosphere, our center will meet you where you are at with our highly trained instructors and consistent teaching.  We provide a safe space for everyone to learn and grow individually and as a community on and off the mat.

“After all, the goal of yoga may be the ultimate freedom but even before this is achieved, there is an incremental experience of greater freedom as we discover ever more self-control, sensitivity, and awareness that permit us to live the life we aspire to, one of decency; clean, honest human relations; goodwill and fellowship; trust; self-reliance; joy in the fortune of others; and equanimity in the face of our own misfortune.”

Sharing wisdom

Ever wondered if you were doing a yoga asana in a way where you are receiving optimum benefit?

We are the only Iyengar Yoga studio on the west side of the Big Island, where you can receive these teachings. Our style of yoga offers a distinct methodology and is taught consistently amongst all of our teachers. A student can attend any class and will receive the same style of teaching. Also, unique to our community is the use of props which enables each and every student to receive benefits and have their injuries/challenges accommodated.

Our Studio

Our beautiful studio occupies the upper floor of an old plantation home with high-beamed ceilings, hardwood floors and windows (with forever views) on all four walls. We provide a full range of props, including yoga mats, blocks, straps, blankets and rope walls for student use. The Big Island Yoga Center is located on the West side of the Island of Hawaii in the cool, upland town of Kealakekua (10 miles South of Kailua-Kona, the tourist center of the Island).

“Yoga is like music: the rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.”
—B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life
